At the core of the Swan Reach Observatory is the Planewave CDK700, a world-class research-grade telescope. Designed for precision and clarity, it captures stunning deep-sky images and enables advanced astronomical research under the pristine dark skies of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

In 2019, the Mid Murray region was accredited as Australia’s first International Dark Sky Reserve — one of only a handful worldwide. This recognition inspired the creation of the Swan Reach Observatory, giving visitors a chance to enjoy astronomy experiences normally reserved for major research facilities.

The River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve, including Swan Reach, is a protected area with exceptionally dark night skies, ideal for stargazing, astronomy, and astrophotography
Swan Reach Observatory features the CDK700 research-grade telescope, capturing stunning deep-sky images and supporting advanced astronomical research.
